A fond farewell to Dave Edgar
Just as we were all getting used to the scouse accent, Dave announced his intention to retire ! What’s more, he’s moving back to Liverpool to get away from us “Blerts” (i.e. lightweights, usually from down south).
Dave joined the Thanet Countryside Trust as our Conservation Manager in 2011, following the closure of the nature reserve off Broadoak Road, Canterbury, by Kent County Council. Their loss was our gain, as Dave (not David) brought with him a wealth of knowledge and experience, all of which was successfully applied in improving the ecology and habitats in Monkton Nature Reserve.
Over Dave’s eight years in post he has seen volunteers come and go, staff come and go, even Trustees come and go; and yet he’s remained as the cornerstone of the organisation, a constant figure during sometimes stormy and difficult times at the Reserve.
Dave can turn his hand to most tasks at the Reserve, from felling trees to guided walks, giving talks to schools and greeting individual visitors, as well as managing the fluctuating numbers of volunteers available at any one time or any one season. So he will be a big loss to us … and we have been seeking ways to drain his knowledge before he escapes us !
Dave is actually moving back to his homeland to be with one of his daughters and her expanding family. No doubt the duties of a grandfather will take up some of his time. But Dave has informed us that he does intend to keep volunteering, and this time at Croxteth Hall in Liverpool where he grew up collecting birds’ eggs and scrumping apples in its 500 acres. ! We do hope Dave doesn’t ‘let on’ what he did at Monkton Nature Reserve, otherwise he could find he has no spare time at all.
Quite obviously, everyone associated with the Trust and the Reserve wishes Dave all the best for his future (his final day being Tuesday 26th March). He will be missed !
Or, to put it another way … Us soft lads ‘ope Dave’s made up about movin’ back to Noggsy / Crocky / Tocky / de’ Brook / Walton, or even de’ South End, and has a boss time in retirement – deffo !
