Every 4th Friday of the month (except May, June and July) the Monkton Stargazers hold an astronomy viewing session which is open to non-members of the Reserve.
This month we have a presentation from guest speaker Ashley Fuggle, from South East Kent Astronomical Society (SEKAS) on “Astrophotography Without a Telescope”.
Afterwards, weather permitting, the observatory will be open and perhaps the photographers will have a chance to practice their newly learned skills. There will be a nearly full Moon so that will make an excellent target for photography and observations alike.
Members are encouraged to bring and use their own telescopes, binoculars and cameras – the more the better.
Gates open 18:30, talk from 19:00, observing from approximately 20:00-20:30.
A session is free to attend, but non-members will be asked to become members of the Reserve if they wish to attend any future sessions. As well as the normal benefits of membership, new members who choose the free option of joining the Monkton Stargazers will be informed about additional impromptu viewing sessions, which are held throughout the year.
When attending these sessions, be sure to wear suitable clothing for the evening, especially during the winter months. Please also wear sturdy footwear as the track leading to the observatories is uneven. If you have your own torch (preferably equipped with a red filter) that would be beneficial, as the Reserve can get very dark at night.
Children are welcome to attend, but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.
Viewing is, of course, weather dependent and it is highly recommended that visitors phone the Reserve after midday on the day of the session to check last minute details. Our astronomers are usually reluctant to cancel sessions and in the event of overcast conditions they may put on an indoor event. Our telephone number is 01843 822666.
