Volunteering Positions

Want to meet new people?  Develop skills?  Get involved in a project?  Why not join the team of volunteers at Monkton Nature Reserve?

As Monkton Nature Reserve is a charity, volunteers are at the core of our operations and we are now looking for new members to join our team to allow us to expand by offering more activities and events.

There are many opportunities – some for those who prefer to be outside, others inside our Field Study Centre with its shop, café, bird viewing area and extensive secondhand bookshop.

We appreciate whatever time you can offer – be it just a couple of hours a week or a full day – or even more!  So please contact us or simply download and complete the pdf Volunteer Application Form or fill in the online form if you feel you would like to join us and help us to expand on what we can offer all our visitors.

The following are some of the openings we have:

  • Education Activity Leaders - Do you have experience teaching groups of children and in-depth knowledge in an area of natural history? We are looking to expand our education team and find group leaders who can get involved in our education days.
  • Greeters – to be in the Reception to welcome visitors on arrival and advise them of what there is to do at the Reserve.  Ideal for those who like public interaction.
  • Café – to serve tea, coffee and soft drinks to our visitors and to keep the kitchen area clean and tidy.
  • Shop – to keep an inventory of the stock, look for new items that will increase sales
  • Plant Sales -  to look after our plants for sale from Easter to September, including maintaining the plant stands and possibly propagating and potting plants.  Try and encourage as many plant donations as possible so they can be sold to raise funds for the Reserve.
  • Fundraising - to assist with expanding our calendar of events and activities.  This role will be working in conjunction with current staff, but needs someone to manage the Events calendar, make contact with possible speakers / workshop leaders etc.  This can be a home based volunteer role.
  • Bid writing for grants - This is a vital role as being a charity we rely on grants to continue our operations.  It can be a home based role.  We require someone with excellent written English and initiative.  You will need to research grant makers relevant to Monkton Nature Reserve and its activities and then complete applications for grants.
  • Website – We need to continually update our website and add more information, so are seeking someone who has experience to take on this task. The website uses the WordPress platform. This could primarily be a home-based role with just occasional visits to the Reserve.
  • Social Media Marketing – We’d love to have someone join our team who would promote Monkton Nature Reserve through the various social media outlets. Facebook and Twitter are our primary platforms. This role could possibly be combined with the Website role.
  • Admin - As with any organisation, there is a lot of admin involved in running the Reserve and we need additional volunteers to assist with a range of admin tasks This role can be home based.
  • Publicity/Marketing - to lead a small team (website and social marketing) in all aspects of promoting Monkton Nature Reserve through social media, local magazines, newspaper articles etc. as well as our own quarterly newsletter. We want to raise the profile of MNR within the local community to encourage more visitors.
  • Team Leader - With the increase in volunteers, we need someone to keep track of who is working on what days, doing what tasks etc.  This can be partly home based but visits to the Reserve will also be necessary.
If you are interested in any of these roles, you can either complete an online volunteer application form here, or, if you prefer a pdf version, you can download and fill in the form using a free app such as Adobe Fill & Sign and email it back to us, or print it off to complete and then return to us. We then look forward to an informal interview to discuss how you can join our team.

Thank you.
